In the parish of Westmoreland, near the Courthouse in Savanna-La-Mar, stands a remarkable Corinthian fluted cast iron fountain. This elegant structure, presented to the town in 1887, was a generous gift from E. J. Sadler, a prominent local planter. The fountain’s design features eight iron columns rising from its base, giving it a distinctive octagonal shape. Each column is adorned with arches, and above each arch, a plaque showcases a pelican motif. This motif, coupled with the inscription “Keep the pavement dry,” reflects a blend of artistic detail and practical advice. The Cast Iron Fountain remains a notable landmark in Savanna-La-Mar, symbolizing both the town’s historical charm and the enduring craftsmanship of the late 19th century. Its presence continues to enhance the local landscape, embodying a piece of Westmoreland’s heritage and the thoughtful contributions of its past benefactors.
