A codicil in Jamaica is a legal document used to modify or add provisions to an existing will without the need to draft a completely new will. It allows individuals to make specific changes, such as altering beneficiaries, updating asset distributions, or correcting errors, while preserving the original will’s validity. The use of a codicil is important when changes in personal circumstances, such as marriage, divorce, or significant financial changes, necessitate adjustments to an estate plan. To create a codicil, the individual must draft the document clearly outlining the amendments, sign it, and have it witnessed in accordance with Jamaican legal requirements. This ensures that the modifications are legally binding and integrated into the original will, maintaining the testator’s intentions and ensuring their estate is managed according to their current wishes.
