The East Queen Street Baptist Church, dedicated on January 22, 1822, once had the largest Baptist congregation in the world, with 2,937 members, underscoring its central role in Jamaica’s religious and cultural life, particularly among the enslaved African population.
Founded by George Liele, a former enslaved African from North America who arrived in Jamaica in 1783, the church’s mission was rooted in his abolitionist beliefs, which opposed enslavement. Unlike other churches, Liele focused on ministering to enslaved people, a message that resonated with many. After emancipation, many former slaves continued to follow the Baptist faith.
In 1966, the church established the George Liele Education Centre, honoring his legacy. The church was also key in founding local schools, including the Gully School, now Calabar Primary and Junior High.
