Close-up of a hardworking, beautiful Jamaican woman, dressed in worn yet vibrant clothing, sweat-drenched and determined, lining up for work in a bustling Jamaican cityscape, with a gritty, cinematic film still aesthetic, evoking the works of acclaimed cinematographer Roger Deakins, with a color palette reminiscent of Wong Kar-wai's nostalgic films, and the dramatic lighting of Gordon Willis

Empress, a term of endearment in Jamaican Patois, is often used to refer to a girlfriend, partner, or woman held in high regard. It carries a sense of respect and admiration, reflecting the cultural pride in recognizing women as regal and dignified. In real estate, a client might say, “Mi waan find a nice place fi mi Empress weh peaceful an’ secure,” expressing a desire to provide a comfortable home for their loved one. Realtors, too, might incorporate the term when engaging with clients, adding a personal touch to their service, such as, “Dis apartment perfect fi yuh Empress—modern kitchen, secure environment, an’ a nice balcony fi relax.” The use of Empress in these contexts underscores the value placed on creating spaces that honor and cater to the important relationships in life.
