In Jamaica, equity means making sure things are fair for everyone, no matter where they come from or what they have. In legal matters, equity helps ensure that when there’s a disagreement, like over land or property, everyone gets treated fairly—not just by following strict rules but by doing what’s right for each person involved. When it comes to money, equity is about owning something, like a house, and how much of it belongs to you after paying off what you owe. For example, if you have a house and still owe money on it, your “home equity” is the part of the house that’s really yours. In society, equity is about making sure everyone has a fair shot, especially people who may have been left out in the past, like getting a good education, healthcare, or a home. It’s not about treating everyone exactly the same, but about giving people what they need to succeed.
