Fort Charles is a notable historic military structure in Port Royal, Kingston Parish, Jamaica, and is among the oldest forts on the island. Built in the late 1650s, it was initially named Fort Cromwell after Oliver Cromwell, the English leader, but was later renamed Fort Charles with the restoration of the monarchy under King Charles II, aligning its name with British governance changes. Originally constructed to protect the bustling port of Port Royal—a key trade and piracy center in the Caribbean—the fort played a central defensive role during the colonial era. Upgraded multiple times between 1656 and 1670, Fort Charles initially held 36 cannons and later expanded to include 104 cannons by 1765, with accommodations for a garrison of 500 men.
