
Fort Montego, an 18th-century military installation, is located in the bustling town of Montego Bay in St. James Parish, Jamaica. The fort was constructed to defend Montego Bay’s harbor and town from potential maritime threats. Equipped with four 12-pounder cannons and five smaller guns, Fort Montego was intended to be a substantial fortification. One notable incident occurred in 1760 when one of the fort’s neglected, rusted cannons exploded while firing a celebratory salute for the British capture of Havana, resulting in the death of a gunner.
