It began with plantation estates carved out during the colonial era—large tracts of land granted to British elites, worked by enslaved Africans, and used as instruments of wealth, power, and control. For centuries, land ownership in Jamaica wasn’t just about property. It was about access, privilege, and survival.

Fast-forward to independence in 1962, and land reform began to shape the future. Government programs encouraged homeownership. Titles were created for informal settlements. Generational wealth started building not just through foreign ownership—but through locals investing in their own soil.
