Good Hope Great House, located in Trelawny, Jamaica, traces its origins back to a land grant given to Colonel Thomas Williams, whose estate spanned one thousand acres along the Martha Brae River. The estate, named Good Hope, was established in the parish of Trelawny and later passed into the hands of John Tharp, who would become one of the largest landowners and slaveholders in Jamaica. Tharp, a complex figure, had a family with both legitimate children and a daughter born from a relationship with one of his slaves, whom he favored greatly. His daughter, who later married well in England, received a substantial annual income from him. Tharp spent much of his later years in England, where he remarried, only to face personal turmoil from a scandal involving his wife and his daughter’s husband.
