A Justice of the Peace (JP) is a legally recognized individual in Jamaica and many other parts of the world who is authorized to perform a variety of duties typically associated with the administration of justice, such as witnessing signatures, administering oaths, and certifying documents. In Jamaica, the role is particularly important in community settings, where JPs act as a trusted mediator, offering guidance, resolving minor disputes, and ensuring that legal processes are upheld. They are usually appointed by the Governor-General after a thorough vetting process, which includes considering their integrity, community service, and respect within their locality. In real estate, JPs often play a vital role in witnessing the signing of important legal documents, such as property deeds or affidavits, ensuring that these documents are executed in accordance with the law.
