Kettering, located in Duncans, Trelawny, is a historically significant free village named after Reverend William Knibb’s birthplace in Northampton, England. Reverend Knibb, a devoted Baptist minister and abolitionist, played a pivotal role in Jamaica’s post-emancipation history. He came to Jamaica in 1825, where he initially worked as a teacher for enslaved people in Kingston, teaching at a school established at East Queen Street Baptist Church.

Reverend Knibb’s commitment to education and emancipation led him to become a tireless advocate for the freedom of enslaved Jamaicans. He strongly believed in the power of education to uplift people and worked to secure opportunities for both spiritual and intellectual growth among the enslaved population. His mission in Jamaica extended far beyond the classroom, as he also fought for the abolition of slavery and the rights of free people.
