Morant Bay Fort

Morant Bay Fort is a historic military fortification located in St. Thomas Parish, Jamaica, near the Morant Bay Courthouse and overlooking the picturesque harbour. Likely constructed around 1758, the fort was originally designed to house nine guns, serving as a coastal defense structure during a period when Jamaica faced threats from European rivals and the possibility of pirate attacks. Built from brick and cut stone approximately four inches thick, Morant Bay Fort exemplifies 18th-century military architecture in the Caribbean. Each gun was mounted on elaborate cast iron carriages, and although time has worn down much of the original equipment, three impressive 24-pounder cannons remain. These cannons, manufactured in the early 19th century, stand as a reminder of the fort’s defensive role and historical significance.
