
Located in the parish of St. Catherine, Phillippo Baptist Church stands as a landmark of Jamaica’s religious and cultural history. Established in 1827, the church is named in honor of James Phillippo, an influential Baptist missionary whose legacy is deeply intertwined with the emancipation and upliftment of Jamaica’s formerly enslaved population. Phillippo’s work extended far beyond preaching; he played a pivotal role in the establishment of Sligoville, Jamaica’s first free village, designed to provide land and opportunities for emancipated Africans following the abolition of slavery. His efforts in community building and education laid a foundation for the social transformation of post-slavery Jamaica.
Phillippo served the community for fifty years, dedicating his life to the spiritual and social development of the people. The churchyard holds the graves of Phillippo, his wife, and his daughter, symbolizing the family’s deep connection to the congregation and their lifelong commitmen…
