Portland Point Lighthouse

The Portland Point Lighthouse, located in the parish of Clarendon, is one of Jamaica’s most significant and striking lighthouses. It boasts the tallest tower on the island, standing an impressive 145 feet above the ground. This towering structure is positioned at the summit of the Portland Ridge, near the southernmost tip of the island, offering a commanding view of the surrounding seas and coastline. The lighthouse serves as a critical navigational aid for vessels traveling along the southern coast of Jamaica and beyond, ensuring safe passage through these often treacherous waters.

The Portland Point Lighthouse emits a white flashing light every 15 seconds, which can be seen from a considerable distance, guiding ships safely away from the rugged shores. It is strategically located at latitude 17° 44′ 9″ north and longitude 77° 9′ 58″ west, marking the southern boundary of the island and standing as a beacon for maritime traffic in the region.
