A presbyter, traditionally a term used within Christian denominations, refers to an elder or minister who holds a leadership role within the church. In Jamaica, as in other parts of the world, a presbyter may be responsible for overseeing the spiritual and administrative functions of a parish or congregation. This role often involves guiding the congregation in worship, teaching, and pastoral care, as well as making decisions regarding church property and real estate. Whether in an urban or rural setting, the presbyter’s influence can extend to managing church-owned lands or buildings, ensuring they are maintained and used in accordance with the church’s mission. The position of a presbyter signifies a blend of spiritual authority and practical responsibility, shaping both the faith community and its physical presence in the local area.
