REALTOR® vs. Real Estate Agent in Jamaica: What’s the difference?

In Jamaica, people often confuse the terms “Real Estate Agent” and “REALTOR®,” but they actually mean different things. A Real Estate Agent is someone who has a license to help people buy, sell, or rent properties. They usually work for a real estate company and guide clients through property transactions, making sure everything runs smoothly. For example, if you’re buying a house in Kingston, a Real Estate Agent would help you find options, negotiate the price, and manage the paperwork.

On the other hand, a REALTOR® is a special type of Real Estate Agent. To become a REALTOR®, the agent must join the REALTORS® Association of Jamaica (RAJ) or its global partner, the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR). Being a REALTOR® means that the agent follows strict rules, known as the Code of Ethics, which sets high standards for honesty and professionalism. For instance, a REALTOR® must always act in the best interest of their clients, ensuring fairness in every deal.
