Reconveyance occurs when a borrower fully repays the mortgage loan for a property, leading to the transfer of complete ownership from the bank or mortgage company to the homeowner. In Jamaica, where property transactions often involve financial institutions as intermediaries, reconveyance marks the conclusion of a long-term financial agreement. Typically, when a home is purchased, the buyer does not pay the full amount upfront but instead secures a loan, making monthly payments to the lender, who holds the property in trust. This process ensures that the lender retains an interest in the property until the loan is fully satisfied. The concept of reconveyance has deep roots in real estate law, serving as the counterpart to foreclosure.
