Rio Nuevo Battle Site

The Rio Nuevo Battle Site, located near the Rio Nuevo river in Jamaica’s Saint Mary Parish, marks the location of the final significant battle between British and Spanish forces in June 1658. This engagement, known as the Battle of Rio Nuevo, was the largest fought on Jamaican soil. The battle concluded with a decisive English victory, leading to the eventual cession of Jamaica from Spain to England under the Treaty of Madrid in 1670. 

Today, the site features a heritage park and museum that offers visitors insights into this pivotal historical event. Artifacts from the battle and remnants of the diverse cultures that have influenced Jamaica’s history are displayed, providing a comprehensive understanding of the island’s colonial past. 

The park is situated approximately 9 miles east of Ocho Rios, making it accessible for those interested in exploring Jamaica’s rich heritage.
