Tract housing refers to a development model where multiple homes are built closely together on subdivided land parcels, each on an individual lot. This architectural approach often features multiple similar homes, though modern developments may include a variety of designs. Tract homes are typically more affordable than custom-built homes due to their mass production, which lowers building costs through bulk purchasing of materials and streamlined construction processes. Many components, such as stairs and roof trusses, are prefabricated, further reducing expenses. This concept originated from Europe’s row housing developments and gained prominence in the United States with the Leviton, New York development after World War II, where entire suburban neighborhoods were quickly constructed to house young families.
