Storm Update
The south-central Caribbean is hosting Tropical Storm Melissa, now under close watch as it moves slowly toward Jamaica. The National Hurricane Center reports that the storm is producing maximum sustained winds of approximately 50 mph (80 km/h).
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Jamaica. Forecasts indicate the system may approach the island late this week and could strengthen into a hurricane if conditions—such as warm sea-surface temperatures and low wind shear—favour intensification.
One of the major threats is heavy rainfall: eastern Jamaica could receive several inches of rain, with even higher totals possible if the storm slows further. The National Hurricane Center warns of 2 – 4 inches in western Jamaica and up to 5 – 10 inches in parts of Hispaniola, increasing the risk of flash flooding and landslides.
