Port Royal, Jamaica, earned the moniker “wickedest city on Earth” due to its infamous reputation as a haven for pirates, privateers, and buccaneers during the late 17th century. Several notable events unfolded in Port Royal over its history:

  1. Pirate Hub Establishment: Around the mid-17th century, Port Royal burgeoned into a bustling center for piracy in the Caribbean. It attracted notorious figures like Henry Morgan, who utilized it as a base for plundering Spanish vessels and settlements.

  2. Great Earthquake of 1692: A catastrophic earthquake struck Port Royal on June 7, 1692, causing large sections of the city to sink beneath the sea. Approximately two-thirds of the city was submerged, and the quake claimed the lives of thousands. This event stands as one of the deadliest natural disasters in Jamaican history and left an indelible mark on the region.
