Along with the People’s National Party (PNP), the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) is one of the two main political parties in Jamaica. Sir Alexander Bustamante, who went on to become Jamaica’s first prime minister, founded it in 1943. The JLP has long supported conservative policies, free-market ideas, and privatization. It is widely regarded as a center-right political party. Conservative voters, economic interests, and middle-class Jamaicans all strongly support the party. Since Jamaica attained independence in 1962, the PNP and the JLP have alternated in power, a fact that has greatly impacted Jamaican politics. Andrew Holness, Edward Seaga, and Sir Alexander Bustamante are notable JLP leaders.
